laJohn’s Coal Yeat Grand Duke 238E takes Supreme Champion after winning the Saddleback Championship. John also takes the Modern Championship and the Oxford, Sandy and Black Championship. Not content with a hat trick from Cumbria, Carole’s Harmony sow took the British Lop Championship. All in all a very good day for Cumbria’s pig exhibitors.
Imogen, my grand daughter, won the Young Handlers Class with Harry, her brother, taking a fourth. Both children had a successful show overall with Imogen winning a class of nine July gilts with Coal Yeat Dinah. Whilst Harry took third place in the same class with Coal Yeat Babble. No mean feat in a large class of very good gilts.
Entries in the commercial classes took the Reserve Champion Pair of Pigs. A pair of well-grown Welsh pigs destined for the local Cumbrian butchers.
Altogether this was the most successful show for the Sutcliffe family. It was definitely a team effort with 19 pigs to prepare and show. Grateful thanks to Spencer and Kaisha for their hard work. Also to Andy Warburton, who did a great job organising numbers for the classes. Not forgetting thanks to Margaret, my wife, who provided accommodation, food and drink in her horse box and tolerated the pong of the pig people!
A real “Team Sutcliffe” victory.
Cheshire County Show pig section is always such a happy occasion with all exhibitors mucking in and helping each other to prepare, wash and show the wonderful range of traditional and modern pigs. Janice Wood who organises everyone, with such a happy smile on her face, really has to be congratulated in ensuring everything runs so smoothly.
All the Saddleback exhibitors were so delighted that a new exhibitor to the breed, Mr Chesworth, was selected to represent the breed in the Flack pair’s class and won. Repeating this achievement on the second day as well. And who came second on each occasion? None other than myself with a pair of Coal Yeat Hampshire pigs.[I did tell him he was not to beat me!].
Meanwhile in the USA the 6 exported pigs have been liberated from isolation on 20th June and are now on their home farm. Matt and his family are delighted to welcome the six Saddlebacks after such a long wait.
The next show is the Great Yorkshire at Harrogate on the 12/14 of July. England’s premier agricultural show but my champion boar will not be going, as there is no class for adult boars. A sad omission in my opinion. How can they claim to be the countries leading livestock show when excluding such magnificent animals??
